Emma Salerno

Vice Chair

I am the Managing Partner of Salerno Law, a law firm with its head office in Kununurra and an office in Queensland. We represent pastoralists, farmers and rural clients all over Australia. I grew up on El Questro Station in the Kimberley. Myself and my brothers operate a pastoral business. With practical experience on the land, being a member of the cattle export industry and having a legal background, I am well placed to assist our industry to navigate an exciting but challenging time ahead. We have an abundance of opportunity within the northern regions of Australia and in particular, within the pastoral industry, if we are able to harness it. I am proud of the efforts of those who have laid the foundations for the KPCA and I am keen to assist in driving greater stakeholder value and establishing the KPCA as an innovative industry development body.

My wife Jane and I run Yougawalla Pastoral Company taking in Yougawalla, Bulka, Margaret River Stations and sublease arrangements with Indigenous leases Louisa Downs, Lamboo and Carranya Stations. We also own Mandora Station south of Broome. We have been in the Kimberley for 10 years and I am passionate about the beef industry here and growing its future. I believe that we need strong representation as an industry and have been delighted to see the exceptional growth of the KPCA in recent years. I strongly believe that industry needs a loud, clear and united voice on issues such as red tape and bureaucratic malaise impeding development opportunities in the region, research and development projects to further our productivity and development of infrastructure projects to support the growth of the industry. These and the myriad of other concerns and day to day issues producers face can be represented well through a strong KPCA and I would like to be able to contribute.

I have grown up in the pastoral industry on Noreena Downs Station in the Pilbara. I’m currently joint manger of Noreena with my sister, where we run a mix heard of Droughtmasters, Brahmanas and shorthorn cattle for the live export and domestic markets. I’m passionate about the beef industry and I’m in the for the long haul with an open mind about future markets and how we need to get ready for them. Growing up in the pastoral industry, I have seen many changes come in a short time. One of the changes I believe strongly in is the move to low stress stock handling and better animal welfare. I am very interested in better land management and regeneration of pastures. I have also worked in the cropping sector of agriculture and in mining and construction which I have found to be useful in bringing different ways to deal with problems to the table.
